Hattiesburg Events is a free community calendar run by a small group of local volunteers. It isn’t a company. We don’t show ads, we don’t sell anything, and we don’t sell or trade anyone’s information. This page says what we collect, why, who can see it, and how long we keep it.

If you only look at the calendar

You don’t need an account, and we don’t ask you for anything.

  • We don’t use analytics, advertising or tracking cookies.
  • If you switch to dark mode, that choice is saved in your own browser and never sent to us.
  • Subscribing to a calendar feed doesn’t sign you up for anything. Your calendar app downloads the feed from us, and we don’t know who subscribes.
  • Like every website, the companies that host ours keep short-lived server logs that include your IP address and browser type. We use them only to keep the site running and to stop abuse.
  • An event’s picture is loaded from the website that posted it, such as a venue’s site or Facebook, so that website sees your browser’s request for the picture.

If you submit an event or suggest a source

When you submit an event, we ask for your name and email, and a phone number if you want to give one. When you suggest a source, your name and email are optional.

  • We use them only to contact you if we have a question about what you sent.
  • Only the calendar’s admins can see them. They are never shown on the site.
  • The event details you submit (title, description, time, place, links) become public once an admin approves the event.
  • To limit spam, we count how many submissions come from one IP address in an hour. That count isn’t saved with your submission.

If you connect a Facebook Page

A Page admin can connect their Page so its public events appear on the calendar. You sign in with Facebook, and Facebook asks your permission before sharing anything with us.

What we receive and keep:

  • The name and ID of the Page you connect.
  • An access token for that Page, which lets us read its events. It is stored encrypted, and Facebook also tells us which permissions you granted and when they run out.
  • The Page’s public events: title, description, date and time, place, cover picture and ticket link. These are shown on the calendar.

What we don’t keep or read:

  • Anything about your personal Facebook account. The sign-in is used once to find the Pages you manage and is not saved.
  • Your Page’s posts, comments, messages, followers or statistics. Events are all we ask Facebook for.
  • Your other Pages. If you manage more than one, Facebook sends us the list so you can pick. We hold it encrypted while you choose, and it can’t be used after 15 minutes.

We never post, comment, send messages or change anything on your Page.

If you are one of the calendar’s admins

Admin accounts are by invitation only. We store your name, your email and your password in a scrambled form that can’t be read back. Each time you sign in, we record the IP address and browser you used so that sign-ins can be reviewed.

Cookies

We use cookies in two places, and neither is used to track you:

  • A sign-in cookie for admins, which lasts up to two weeks.
  • A cookie that lasts 30 minutes while you connect a Facebook Page, so the sign-in comes back to the same browser that started it.

Companies that handle this information for us

  • Vercel hosts the website and Railway hosts the database.
  • Sentry receives a report when something on the site breaks. We strip cookies, email addresses and anything typed into a form out of those reports before they are sent.
  • Meta (Facebook) is involved only if you connect a Page, and its own privacy policy covers what it does.

We don’t share your information with anyone else, unless the law requires us to.

How long we keep it

  • Your contact details from a submission or suggestion: until you ask us to delete them.
  • A Page’s connection: until you disconnect it or ask us to remove it. Facebook also ends our access after about 90 days unless you sign in again.
  • Admin accounts: until an owner removes the account.
  • Backups: copies of the database can hold deleted information for a while longer, until the backup itself is replaced.

Deleting your information

You can ask us to delete your contact details or your Page’s connection at any time. The steps are on the Delete your data page.

Children

The calendar is for a general audience. We don’t knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you think a child has sent us their contact details, tell us and we will delete them.

Changes and questions

If we change what we collect, we will update this page and the date at the top. Questions go to privacy@hattiesburg.events.
